Peter Munya has formally declared his intention to contest the Meru Governor’s seat in the upcoming 2027 elections. Munya, who previously lost to Kiraitu Murungi in 2017, aims to reclaim the position after Kiraitu’s defeat to Kawira Mwangaza in 2022.
However, Munya faces significant obstacles in his quest to regain the governorship, including challenges stemming from his previous tenure in office.
One major setback during Munya’s administration was the implementation of the Probase technology roads project, which ultimately failed to meet expectations.
Despite being touted as a long-term solution, these roads have become a daily source of frustration for local residents.
In less than five years, they have deteriorated to the point of being nearly impassable, causing inconvenience and risking safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.
The Kianjai-Urru-Miathene route, in particular, has become notorious, with vehicles often getting stuck in muddy quagmires, forcing travelers to endure lengthy delays or resort to arduous methods to navigate the terrain.
Another notable failure under Munya’s leadership was the bulls project, which aimed to improve local beef breeds but ended up squandering taxpayers’ money.
At a cost of Sh2.4 million in 2014, the project resulted in the procurement of bulls deemed unfit for their intended purpose, reportedly leading to their slaughter due to being deemed “too heavy to perform.”
In addition to these challenges, Munya’s affiliation with the Azimio coalition led by Raila Odinga poses another hurdle.
Kiraitu Murungi’s association with the same coalition was cited as a contributing factor to his defeat in the 2022 elections, suggesting potential backlash against Munya’s candidacy.
As Munya embarks on his gubernatorial campaign, he must address these concerns and work to regain the trust of Meru residents, demonstrating a clear vision and effective leadership to overcome past failures and lead the county towards progress and prosperity.
