A harrowing incident unfolded in Mbui Njeru village, Kirinyaga County, as a middle-aged man fell victim to a vicious hippopotamus attack, leaving him with severe injuries.

Harrison Njiru bore the brunt of the assault, sustaining significant wounds, before being rescued by alert neighbors who happened upon the scene.

Acting swiftly, the neighbors transported Njiru to a private hospital in Mwea town, where he is presently undergoing treatment for his injuries.

Fortunately, Njiru’s condition is reported to be stable, albeit with noticeable abdominal and chest injuries being the primary concern.

In response to the alarming incident, officials from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) intervened, taking decisive action by neutralizing the aggressive hippopotamus. Subsequently, local residents were provided with the opportunity to benefit from the meat of the animal.

Amidst expressions of relief for Njiru’s survival, community members voiced their concerns over the escalating frequency of hippo attacks in the area, urging government intervention to address the growing menace.
