In a ground-breaking initiative aimed at transforming the lives of underprivileged youth, 1,000 orphans and needy Kenyans are set to begin classes at Tom Mboya University this week.
This opportunity is made possible through the Widows Empowerment Program, under the patronage of Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary, Dr. Raymond Omollo.
The initiative is a significant step toward integrating these students into the German labour market, where they will be trained for high-paying jobs in various sectors of the economy.
The students, many of whom are academically gifted but financially disadvantaged, will undergo a six-month preparatory process at Tom Mboya University.
This training is the first crucial step in their journey to Germany, where they will join the prestigious German Ausbildungen (Apprenticeship) program.
Unlike the traditional roles often associated with migrant workers, these students will be trained for specialized positions in banking, hospitality, healthcare, transportation, ICT, and construction.
The program not only offers them the chance to break free from the cycle of poverty but also equips them with the skills to excel in highly competitive industries.
The apprenticeship programs (Ausbildungen) in Germany are designed for school leavers who opt not to pursue degree programs.
These students are employed by companies where they work part-time while attending school. The programs typically last three years, during which the students receive a monthly salary to support their living expenses.
To qualify for these programs, students must secure a host company or training institution and demonstrate a strong proficiency in the German language, a course now available at Tom Mboya University.
Dr. Raymond Omollo, deeply moved by the challenges faced by orphans and needy students, collaborated with like-minded individuals to establish this life-changing opportunity.
His leadership has been instrumental in ensuring that these students not only receive an education but also a pathway to sustainable careers. The Widows Empowerment Program, under his guidance, has become a beacon of hope for those who might otherwise be left behind.
The German Ausbildung program is a highly regarded training system that offers students a unique combination of practical work experience and academic learning.
In 2022, AG-Career Hub facilitated a partnership between Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in Germany and Mount Kenya University, fostering collaborations that have paved the way for Kenyan students to train in Germany.
The first pilot project launched in 2023, providing young people with the opportunity to train as nurses in Germany. The initial cohort arrived in Germany in April 2024 and has since begun their training.
This latest initiative at Tom Mboya University represents a continuation of these efforts, expanding opportunities for Kenyan youth across various sectors.
