Lands, Housing, and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary nominee Alice Wahome has presented a compelling case for her reappointment during her vetting by the National Assembly Vetting Committee.
Wahome emphasized her strong work ethic, team-oriented attitude and extensive experience.
“I’m a team worker, I’m a hard worker, I believe in hard work and I have the right attitude to carry out my work as a minister,” she asserted.
Wahome highlighted her tenure as the CS for Lands from October 5 2023 to July 11 2024, noting her successful implementation of several programs within the ministry.
Her previous experience as a lawyer provided her with a deep understanding of the challenges and intricacies of the ministry.
She expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for his confidence in her, reflected in her re-nomination.
“I find that as a confirmation or expression of confidence that I did my work properly and, subject to the approval, I’m willing to serve the country in that capacity,” Wahome stated.
Before her stint at the Lands Ministry, Wahome served as the CS for Water from September 2023, where she implemented frameworks to reduce non-revenue water and establish water purchase agreements.
She significantly raised national water coverage from 65% to 72% and improved sanitation coverage from 26% to 32%.
From Joblessness
For the first time since 1985, Alice Wahome experienced joblessness following President Ruto’s decision to dissolve his entire Cabinet on July 11, 2024, in response to nationwide protests.
Wahome, who has had an uninterrupted career spanning nearly four decades, expressed her relief and eagerness to return to work during her vetting.
“It’s a relief Mr. Speaker, you know I am jobless and I need the job,” she remarked jovially.
Wahome’s career began at the Attorney General’s Chambers as State Counsel in 1985.
She later established her own law practice in 1989 and subsequently served two terms as the Kandara Constituency MP before joining President Ruto’s Cabinet.
Despite her brief period of unemployment, President Ruto re-nominated her to the Lands Ministry, underscoring his trust in her capabilities.
Wealth Declaration
During her vetting, Alice Wahome disclosed her net worth, which stands at Sh327,650,000, shared with her husband.
She attributed the increase in her net worth to the appreciation of her properties and a significant rent payment of Sh14 million received in March.
“It’s mine and my husband. It’s Sh327,650,000,” she clarified.
Wahome’s financial transparency extends back to her initial vetting in October 2022, when she declared a net worth of Sh218,400,000.
Her assets include family properties co-owned with her husband, from which she derives a monthly income of about Sh500,000.
Despite her demanding public roles, Wahome has continued to practice law at Wahome and Akedi Advocates, a firm she co-owns with her daughter.
