Interior Cabinet Secretary nominee Kithure Kindiki on Thursday revealed that his net worth has increased by Ksh.150 million since his initial appointment as CS in October 2022.

During his vetting by the National Assembly Committee on Appointments at County Hall in Nairobi, Kindiki disclosed that his wealth has grown from Ksh.544 million to Ksh.694 million, attributing this rise to his law firm.

“I said at that time, which I still do now, that I run a business which today even if I do not practise law, is working and much of that revenue has come from it. It is still active and being managed by other people,” the law professor turned minister explained.

He emphasized that his financial gains were legitimate, asserting, “I have not benefitted from any improper business; I have not done any business with the government, any tender by myself, proxy, relative or anybody.”

Kindiki, who previously served in the Interior docket before President William Ruto dissolved his Cabinet on July 11, is one of the members nominated back to the Cabinet amidst nationwide protests against the administration.

His tenure as security minister has been contentious, with the police facing heavy criticism for using excessive force and violence against protestors.

According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, over 60 people have been killed since the demonstrations began.

Defending the police’s conduct, Kindiki last month stated that the government would investigate claims of abductions and enforced disappearances allegedly carried out by security personnel during the protests.

Additionally, Kindiki has taken a proactive stance in addressing the management of protests, drafting regulations to ensure proper conduct.

In his appearance before the National Assembly’s vetting committee, Kindiki also defended the police deployment to Haiti, describing it as an international obligation that has not compromised local security.

Kindiki is the first of 20 nominees to face the committee, which is chaired by Speaker Moses Wetangula.

The vetting process continued with Health nominee Debra Mlongo Barasa, Lands and Urban Housing nominee Alice Wahome, Education nominee Julius Migos Ogamba, and Defense nominee Roselinda Soipan Tuya scheduled for subsequent sessions.

At 52, Kindiki boasts a career spanning 26 years in legal practice, academia, and politics.

Before his first Cabinet appointment, he served two terms as the senator of Tharaka Nithi and taught law at Moi University and the University of Nairobi, where he rose to the position of associate dean of the school of law.
