President William Ruto’s recent decision to form a broad-based government has been lauded as an astute political manoeuvre and a significant step towards inclusive development.
The new cabinet, reflecting the true face of Kenya, has notably included key figures from the Luo community, marking a historic shift in the nation’s political landscape.
For the first time since independence, the Treasury Docket will be headed by a Minister from the Luo community. John Mbadi brings 28 years of experience in finance, leadership and politics.
The ODM chairman and chair of the Public Accounts Committee in the National Assembly, Mbadi has extensive knowledge in public finance, including accounting, budgeting, taxation and finance management.
His career trajectory, spanning roles from accountant to finance director, and his advisory role to Opposition Chief Raila Odinga, make him a highly qualified choice for the position.
In addition to Mbadi, the new cabinet nominees include Opiyo Wandayi as the Cabinet Secretary for Energy.
Both leaders hail from Luo Nyanza and are expected to be instrumental in President Ruto’s administration, holding the most critical dockets in cabinet.
The President’s inclusive approach aims to restore public trust and create a conducive environment for delivering on his agenda for Kenyans.
However, President Ruto’s selection was not solely based on regional representation. He sought out highly qualified individuals to ensure effective governance. Opiyo Wandayi, poised to lead the Energy Ministry, has a solid track record in legislative leadership and governance.
Pundits argue that PS Raymond Omollo has played a crucial role in the new appointments, having worked for two years in the Ministry of Interior, led by Professor Kithure Kindiki.
Kenyans Speak
Kenyans have expressed their optimism and support for the new broad based government formation.
According to Peter Kariuki, the economic transformation during the Grand Coalition Government of 2008 to 2013 was commendable, expressing confidence that the broad-based government will unlock Kenya’s potential once again.
“PS Raymond Omollo’s contributions to the administration have been crucial in forming a Cabinet that is truly representative of Kenya. I am sure he advised the President appropriately.” says Mr. Ngatia on X.
Sareton Soletei praises the diversity of the new Cabinet, noting that President Ruto is ensuring every Kenyan community has a voice in governance.
“PS Raymond Omollo has been the most consequential and impactful Principal Secretary under President William Ruto. Now we have John Mbadi and Opiyo Wandayi. I must commend the Luo Nyanza Region for always giving us their best sons and daughters to lead Kenya.” says Mr. Murira.
Otieno Onyango, a member of the Luo community, celebrates the milestone of inclusivity.
“I come from the Luo community, and our representation in the new Cabinet is a milestone for inclusivity. For the first time, a Luo will head the Treasury Docket, showcasing the government’s commitment to equitable representation.” He says.
As President Ruto’s administration embarks on this new chapter with a broad-based cabinet, there is renewed hope for unity and progress in Kenya.
The inclusion of seasoned leaders from diverse backgrounds is expected to enhance the government’s effectiveness and drive national development forward.
