The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has brought forth charges against the Deputy Speaker of the Kiambu County Assembly, Mr. John Njue Njru, accusing him of soliciting and accepting a bribe.
Appearing before Senior Magistrate M. J. Torome at Thika Law Courts, Mr. Njru, who also serves as the Member of County Assembly for Hospital Ward, entered a plea of not guilty to both charges.
According to the prosecution, the Deputy Speaker purportedly solicited a financial advantage amounting to Ksh. 130,000 from Anna Nduta Wanjiru on May 29, 2023, at Africana Hotel in Thika Town.
It was alleged that this solicitation was made with the intention of permitting Wanjiru to proceed with the development of her property.
Subsequently, the court was informed that Mr. Njru received the aforementioned sum from the complainant the following day at Community Hall in Thika Town.
Mr. Njru vehemently denied both accusations and was granted release on a cash bail of Ksh. 500,000 or a bond of Ksh. 1 million, with a surety of the same amount. The case has been scheduled for mention on July 17, 2024.
