A somber cloud looms over Kirinyaga as the community grapples with the untimely demise of Sergeant Rose Nyawira, a devoted member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
Sergeant Nyawira tragically lost her life in a fatal helicopter crash in Sindar, Elgeyo Marakwet County, leaving her family shattered by grief.
In the quaint village of Kagio, Nyawira’s loved ones gather, attempting to navigate the overwhelming waves of sorrow crashing upon them.
The heart-wrenching news of their daughter’s passing reached the family through media reports, a cruel and unexpected blow to their world.
“We first heard the devastating news through a broadcast where the Head of State addressed the tragic incident. It was a surreal moment for us,” shared Mr. Peter Wachira, Nyawira’s father, a man immersed in both grief and disbelief.
Wachira, a diligent dairy farmer, vividly recalled his last moments with his daughter, reminiscing about their Sunday encounter filled with laughter and conversation, unaware that it would be their final farewell amidst the pouring rain.
Describing Nyawira as industrious and upright, Wachira expressed the profound loss echoing through their family’s core.
“The void left by her departure is immeasurable. Our hearts ache with the weight of this loss,” he lamented.
Uncle Timothy Kariuki mirrored the disbelief shared by many upon hearing the tragic news, clinging to hope until the harsh reality was confirmed by his brother, a fellow KDF officer.
Nyawira, among the ten officers lost in the calamitous accident, was not only a dedicated soldier but also a talented photographer, her passion encapsulated in her dual roles.
Her superior, Chief Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla, shared her fate in the fateful incident, amplifying the magnitude of the loss felt within the ranks.
From Kirinyaga’s leadership, messages of sympathy and solidarity poured forth, acknowledging Nyawira’s unwavering dedication and extending support to her grieving family.
“In this moment of profound sorrow, we extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Nyawira’s unwavering commitment to duty will forever be remembered,” expressed Mureithi Kang’ara, chairman of the Kirinyaga Jubilee branch, echoing the sentiments of a community united in mourning.
